St. Theresa Roman Catholic Church - Trumbull, CT

St. Theresa is a vibrant parish of about 3,300 families with an established traditional church music program. There is a three-manual 38 rank Peragallo pipe organ in the main nave and a newly restored Baroque style two-manual tracker organ in the choir loft. Adjacent to the Peragallo organ, there is a Yamaha concert grand piano. Prior to the pandemic, the music program consisted of 3 choirs:  

·      An adult choir composed of 25-30 singers, including four professional section leaders (SATB). The choir sings high quality literature ranging from Gregorian chant and polyphony through 21st century repertoire.

·      The Petit Choir: a chamber group of 8-12 members from the Adult choir (sings mostly a cappella repertoire from all periods)

·      A Children’s Choir (20) There is a great opportunity for growth. St. Theresa School is adjacent to the parish.

 

The ideal candidate is a practicing Catholic familiar with teachings and liturgical practices of the Catholic Church, with years of experience in a large parish, and is a choral conductor with excellent organ, piano, vocal technique, communication, and organizational skills. He/She is a good team player and works well with volunteers of all ages and professional musicians. The music director will work closely with the pastor.

 

The Director of Music is responsible for recruiting choir members and directing the choirs, planning the music for all liturgies and special services during the year, playing the organ, and overseeing all aspects of the music program, such as providing an annual budget proposal to the pastor, the organization/maintenance of the choral library, maintenance of all the instruments, and the hiring and scheduling of all professional singers and instrumentalists, including cantors.  

In addition, the Music Director is responsible for arranging for a substitute organist in the event of absence, illness, vacation, or professional development. The Music Director is also responsible for playing for funerals (about 80 per year) and weddings (coordinating with families, couples, hiring singers and instrumentalists, etc.).  All these services are additional income.

 

This full-time position starts summer 2022 (flexible starting date between August 1 – August 30). It includes a competitive salary commensurate with education and experience, excellent benefits, and flexible hours (vacation cannot be taken on Christmas Eve/Day and during Holy Week/Easter Sunday). Employment is contingent on successful completion of all background checks and Virtus requirements.

Position involves playing Sunday mornings plus special services i.e., Christmas/Easter. Each Sunday involves 2-3 traditional hymns chosen by the pastor, simple liturgy, and an anthem. There is no choir.We have a brand-new Kawai CN37 digital keyboard which offers many sounds and capabilities.
